Bethany Hamilton was born on February 8, 1990, in Lihue, Hawaii. Growing up, she was practically born on a surfboard. She started surfing at the age of 5 and was a natural talent. Surfing wasn't just a hobby for her; it was her passion, her way of life.

But then, at the age of 13, something life-changing happened. It was a crisp Halloween morning on October 31, 2003, in the tranquil waters off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii. Bethany, then just 13 years old, was out surfing with her best friend, Alana Blanchard, and Alana's father, Holt. It was supposed to be a routine morning, just like any other for the young surfer. Suddenly, out of the depths of the ocean, a shadowy figure emerged - a 14-foot tiger shark.
In a swift and terrifying moment, the predator sank its razor-sharp teeth into Bethany's left arm, tearing through flesh and bone. In a flurry of panic and adrenaline, she instinctively fought back, desperately trying to free herself from the grasp of the merciless predator. Holt Blanchard, witnessing the horror unfolding before his eyes, rushed to Bethany's aid, pulling her out of the water and onto his surfboard.
Miraculously, against all odds, Bethany's life was spared that day. The quick actions of Holt, along with the assistance of Alana and another surfer who fashioned a tourniquet from a surfboard leash, helped stem the tide of blood loss and kept her conscious until help arrived.
The aftermath of the attack was both physically and emotionally grueling for Bethany. The loss of her left arm was not just a physical injury; it was a profound and life-altering event that tested her resolve to the core. Yet, amidst the pain and trauma, Bethany displayed remarkable courage and resilience.
"Courage doesn't mean you don't get afraid. Courage means you don't let fear stop you."
Her journey to recovery was marked by countless hours of rehabilitation, both physical and emotional. With unwavering determination, she refused to let the shark attack define her. Instead, she focused on regaining her strength and returning to the one thing she loved most - surfing.
Instead of giving up on her dreams, Bethany showed incredible resilience. She was determined to get back on her surfboard. With unwavering determination and the support of her family and friends, she adapted to her new reality and learned how to surf with just one arm.
Bethany didn't just stop at surfing; she excelled at it. She went on to become a professional surfer, competing in numerous competitions and even winning titles. Her story of overcoming adversity inspired people all over the world. She showed that with courage and perseverance, anything is possible.
In 2013, Bethany married her soulmate, Adam Dirks. They share a beautiful bond, and in 2015, they welcomed their first child, a son named Tobias. Motherhood added a new dimension to Bethany's life, but her love for the ocean and surfing never waned. In fact, she's now sharing her passion with her son, teaching him to ride the waves just like his mom.
Bethany's love for the ocean runs deep. She's not just a surfer; she's an advocate for marine conservation and uses her platform to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our oceans.

In every wave she conquers, Bethany Hamilton embodies strength, resilience, and the true spirit of a surfer. She's a role model for anyone facing challenges and a reminder that nothing can stop you from chasing your dreams.
Bethany's story of survival and triumph over adversity captured the hearts of millions around the world. She became a symbol of hope and resilience, inspiring others to persevere in the face of adversity. And though the scars of that fateful day may never fully fade, Bethany's indomitable spirit continues to shine bright, illuminating the path for others to follow in her footsteps.
